A closer look at the term ‘harm reduction’

picture 109Despite the growth in the use of the term, the meaning, practice and implications of “harm reduction” are matters of some dispute, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Harm reduction has perhaps most controversially been used to respond to addictions and associated harms such as disease transmission. Needle exchange and ‘safer crack use kit’ distribution programs are based on harm reduction principles.

We speak with Katrina Jensen, executive director of AIDS Vancouver Island.
