International AIDS conference calls for a focus on the human rights of people affected by HIV

AIDS 2010, the international conference on HIV/AIDS occurring this week in Vienna, Austria, highlights the critical connection between human rights and HIV, a dialogue begun in earnest during a similar conference in Mexico City in 2008. The conference also coincides with a major international push for expanded access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. (more…)

International declaration calls on governments to base policing of illicit drugs on facts

The Vienna Declaration [opens to PDF] is the official declaration of the 18th International AIDS Conference taking place in Vienna, Austria from July 18 to 23. The Declaration describes the known harms—and failures—of the conventional “war on drugs” approaches and their overwhelmingly negative health and social consequences. The Declaration calls on governments and international organizations to make a number of changes, including the implementation and evaluation of a science-based public health approach to address harms stemming from illicit drug use. Gay and queer men to look at health, wellness in Nanaimo

A three-day-long gathering in Nanaimo on May 28-30 is designed for gay and queer men who want to do more than “just survive.” SHINE will bring together men for workshops, social events, hikes, talking and socializing.

The event is an initiative of AIDS Vancouver Island and is led by Liam “Captain” Snowdon, an outreach worker with AVI. It begins on Friday May 28 with a reception. More information can be found at (more…)

Thousands of Islanders will dine out to fight HIV/AIDS on March 12, 2009. Donations from their food bills will be given to AIDS Vancouver Island. We speak with Andrea Langlois of AIDS Vancouver Island, and representatives from a number of participating restaurants.
