Jimmy Lapointe achieved a big win at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship in March 2015. His efforts were accompanied by fundraising for Nanaimo’s Men’s Centre — and the programs Jimmy says have helped him.

The puck moves quickly up the ice, from the rock-steady defence to the winger flying up the boards on the left side. He skates the puck deep into the corner, turns and sees the centre driving to the front of the net. The pass is a perfect, tape-to-tape effort and as the centre receives the puck she shoots it quickly, not allowing the goalie to get set. The mesh ripples. The crowd cheers loudly, and the players all give each other “High Fives”. Sounds like a scene that happens in every rink in every town across the country. In the fall of 2011 a group of passionate bike riders became passionate about the idea of starting and working in a community bike shop in Nanaimo. There was a need for a good service bicycle shop in the city’s downtown, and the group settled into a space near the China Steps at #12 Lois Lane. Hub City Cycles is a cooperative which sells memberships at a nominal fee to people who are interested in being a part of the cycling lifestyle and learning more about maintaining and repairing their bicycles.
