Meet one of the pushers behind the ongoing overdose-death crisis — Frank Smith, a 59-year-old aboriginal man injured in a 1989 skiing accident and recently a Downtown Eastside habitué

This isn’t another sad First Nations story — it’s a cautionary tale about how addiction triggered by chronic pain, a catalyst in this epidemic, can ruin the life of any Canadian. Smith is the eldest of 11 siblings raised in Carcross, Yukon, in a positive and supportive environment. He never experienced physical or sexual abuse or neglect. A growing group of psychologists are interested in studying “toxic masculinity”

Psychologists looking at 10 years of data from nearly 20,000 men found that those who value having power over women and endorse playboy behavior and other traditional notions of masculinity are more likely to suffer from psychological problems — and less likely to seek out help

In general, the men who stuck more strongly to “traditionally masculine” norms were more likely to experience problems such as depression, stress, body image issues, substance abuse and negative social functioning. They were also less likely to turn to counseling to help deal with those problems. The effect was particularly strong for men who emphasized playboy behavior, power over women and self-reliance.  Read this article at The Washington Post…
