picture 613Hoarding is increasingly recognized as a significant problem within the Island Health region. An estimated 1 in 25 people have some level of hoarding behaviour, and about 11,000 homes may have a hoarding problem in the Greater Victoria area.

Family conflict often underlies youth homelessness, and many homeless youth are fleeing abuse or leaving the care of child welfare services

Many different terms are used to describe young people who are homeless, including including street youth, street kids, runaways, homeless youth, etc. According to The Homeless Hub, youth homelessness refers to young people between the ages of 13 and 24 who are living independently of parents and/or caregivers, and importantly, lack many of the social supports deemed necessary for the transition from childhood to adulthood.

A recent Wisteria Lane walk-through for city officials, politicians, the media and the public gave neighbours a chance to show the progress they’ve made

picture 582Nob Hill-area residents in Nanaimo, who live along a laneway they’ve named Wisteria Lane, have applied a systematic approach to discourage drug use and prostitution in the area. It’s called Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and it focuses on good design and enhancements to the built environment.

Wisteria Lane residents Tanya and Doug Hiltz, Norman Abbey, and others hosted a walk-through for city officials, the mayor and members of Nanaimo city council, MLA Leonard Krog and the public on Saturday September 13, 2014 to show the progress that has been made.

Researchers and policy-makers have come to understand that the characteristics of neighbourhoods, whether measured in terms of their physical, social or economic attributes, can have important impacts on individuals.
