Island singer-songwriters Bobbi Schram, Jerry Paquette, Island Hue, Brian Hazelbower, and Alyse Paquette have gathered their considerable talents for a special fundraising concert in Nanaimo this Friday, November 20th. The Benefits of Song will raise much-needed funds for the 7-10 Club, which offers hot breakfast to the needy on weekdays.

The City of Nanaimo has proclaimed November 16 to 21, 2009 as “Nanaimo Sexual Abuse Awareness Week.” Sexual Abuse Resource Committee (SARC) spokesperson Jacqueline Gautier said, “The issue of child sexual abuse is a very serious one that tremendously impacts our community; it crosses all boundaries of race, creed, gender and socio-economics.” A community forum will be held Wednesday November 18, 2009 at Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo campus. From addiction to recovery and back into academic life
“Talk to Ryan Glover to understand the true value of education,” an article posted on Vancouver Island University’s website suggests.
Ryan was once living in active addiction and spent years on the streets. “I don’t think I even had my Grade 9 before that,” he recently told the Nanaimo Daily News. Now living in recovery, Ryan is looking forward to graduating with a degree from VIU this summer. (more…)

A local advocacy group working on behalf of people experiencing mental illness and addictions is looking to expand its membership.
The Nanaimo Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Council was formed “to discuss community needs and work on collaborative service development initiatives” according to the Nanaimo News Bulletin.
Now the group is calling for the increased involvement of people who actually receive those services. (more…)
