A Victoria-based campaign seeks to discard the street name reminders of British Columbia’s troubled history

picture 453 ‘Taking the Names Down from the Hill’ is a new campaign being launched by SocialCoast.org. It’s designed to bring attention to place names throughout the communities of Victoria, British Columbia, where there have been streets, buildings, and areas named after things with an often disturbing history.

SocialCoast activists hope to educate the public about colonization/decolonization, and the traditional place names on Saanich, Lekwungen, and Esquimalt territory. (more…)

NANAIMO–Some final architectural tweaks have been made to the 33-unit Uplands Walk supportive housing project as it heads toward the development permit application stage. The Nanaimo Design Advisory Panel approved the schematic design last month for the project at 6025 Uplands Dr., and the drawings will be part of the permit application expected to be submitted in April. Nanaimo Eagles team offers the hockey experience to people with developmental challenges

picture 449aThe puck moves quickly up the ice, from the rock-steady defence to the winger flying up the boards on the left side. He skates the puck deep into the corner, turns and sees the centre driving to the front of the net. The pass is a perfect, tape-to-tape effort and as the centre receives the puck she shoots it quickly, not allowing the goalie to get set. The mesh ripples. The crowd cheers loudly, and the players all give each other “High Fives”. Sounds like a scene that happens in every rink in every town across the country. June Ariano-Jakes is the mother of five adult children and the grandmother of four. While she worked by day as a Licensed Childcare Provider, June spent literally thousands of nights poring over books and articles in the search for answers to help her son Nathan battle what would become a twenty-year-long heroin and cocaine addiction.

The medical consequences of eating disorders can go unrecognized, even by experienced clinicians

picture 450Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses with significant, life-threatening medical and psychiatric morbidity and mortality, regardless of an individual’s weight. Anorexia Nervosa (AN), in particular, has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. Risk of premature death is 6-12 times higher in women with AN as compared to the general population, adjusting for age. (more…)
