Lee Herrin, executive director of the Fernwood NRG neighbourhood social enterprise in Victoria, was in Nanaimo recently to speak with representatives from local nonprofit organizations
On March 29, 2015, representatives from some of the over 800 nonprofit organizations in the Nanaimo region gathered at Vancouver Island University for Startup Nanaimo’s Profit for Non-Profits unConference. The event was designed to bring together bright minds from a variety of sectors to discuss, influence, and inspire revenue generation capacity. Organizers facilitated conversation and collaboration among participants with the goal of developing definitive ‘next steps’ for action.
Guest speaker Lee Herrin, executive director of Fernwood NRG, shared key information and lessons learned from his Victoria-based organization’s shift to being enterprising a decade ago. Fernwood NRG operates two licensed daycares, manages 10 three-bedroom affordable housing units, publishes a community newspaper, holds two annual neighbourhood festivals, and operates the Cornerstone Cafe.
We share Lee Herrin’s presentation in full (edited to fit our broadcast time) on our weekly radio broadcast and offer a video copy of the presentation (with added slides and images) at People First Media on YouTube.
