The CHLY radio program Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw (My Honoured Fellow Native People) has been on the air for just a year, broadcasting three times a week from Nanaimo’s community and campus radio station. But in that time it attracted the attention of Canada’s National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA), which honoured the program — and its producers — with a Neskie Award for Aboriginal Affairs and Culture Programming.

The award was announced June 6, 2015 in Halifax. The citation reads: “The winner of this award had a submission that truly impressed the judges. They felt it was truly a show for the communities and very important for connecting and continuing traditions in villages…Clearly this show means a lot and carries a great importance to the producers.”

Longtime CHLY on-air personality and musician Kenny Brault worked with Geraldine Manson, Natasha Bob and Buffi David to create the program and bring it to the airwaves. “I lived here for 30 years and I knew nothing of a culture that has been here for thousands of years,” Brault told the Nanaimo News Bulletin. Geraldine Manson is an elder in residence at Vancouver Island University, Natasha Bob is a Nanaimo school district trustee and Buffi David is an educator in Ladysmith.

This whole area is so rich in culture and history and oftentimes that richness is distilled through the mainstream media. There are a lot of things happening that are depressing in the news, with regards to First Nations people specifically, but this provides an opportunity to highlight the positive work that is happening, too. — Natasha Bob (Nanaimo News Bulletin)

You can hear Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10 a.m. on CHLY 101.7 FM (streaming online at chly.ca).

We speak with Kenny Brault and Geraldine Manson.
