‘We still didn’t know what he had’
Joshua Sherman
It was the fall of 2011. I was twenty-five and in the belly of a hollow darkness.
It was a year into Joshua’s illness and we still didn’t know what he had, only that it had dramatically changed his perception of our parents and me.
We were no longer his loving family but murderers, monsters, pedophiles. Believing our father was a hypnotist who had cast a spell on him, my brother had shown up at Dad’s riverfront bungalow in Muskoka, two hours north of Toronto, seeking revenge.
— Zander Sherman
That stark, painful description comes from the first few paragraphs of Zander Sherman’s frank account of his brother’s descent into mental illness — and the difficult path to bring him to treatment. It was published in Esquire magazine on April 20, 2016.

Zander Sherman shared the story of how he saved his brother, finding him living somewhere near Nelson B.C. in 2015 and taking the steps necessary for him to be hospitalized, in newspapers across Canada last fall. He was also interviewed on our own People First Radio program on October 12, 2015.
Zander Sherman
Now Zander has expanded and updated the story of how Joshua became ill, how the entire family was impacted, and what has happened since Joshua was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and brought into a treatment situation.
We speak with Zander Sherman.
