On the Road…to Find Out includes the stories of three people who relocated to Nanaimo for mental health services, comments from service providers, and the observations of Nanaimo psychiatrist Dr. Joris Wiggers

A new documentary film, On the Road to Find Out, examines the re-location of people with mental illness from smaller communities on Vancouver Island to Nanaimo—in order to access mental health services. The film was commissioned by Columbian Centre and directed by Vancouver Island-based filmmaker Paul Manly.

On the Road to Find Out examines questions like: What happens when people are taken out of their natural social setting after they become mentally ill? What are the positive and negative effects of re-location? Where is home once someone has been relocated for an extended period?

Filmmaker Paul Manly’s work gives expression to people who have experienced re-location as well as to those people who have provided support. This sensitive exploration resonates with the experience of crew members as well. “Mental illness touches everyone in some way and the crew I work with is no exception,” says Manly.

The film includes the participation of three people who relocated to Nanaimo for mental health services, comments from service providers, and the observations of Nanaimo psychiatrist Dr. Joris Wiggers.

the premiere on June 25, 2013

On Tuesday June 25, 2013, at the film’s premiere, some of the film’s participants will be present for a conversation, along with Paul Manly. The film will screen at 6:30p.m., following the Columbian Centre’s annual general meeting, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. The annual meeting and screening are open to the public and anyone interested in the work of the Society are warmly invited to attend. Location: Christ Community Church, 2221 Bowen Road, Nanaimo.
