Despite solid performance, high rates of poverty and a large gap in income between the rich and everyone else put stress on a society and on the economy

picture 458The Conference Board of Canda is an independent, not-for-profit applied research organization that specializes in economic trends, as well as organizational performance and public policy issues. The group’s 2012 “report card” on Canada’s performance has revealed that, despite a general “B” grade in the country’s “society” performance, Canada places 12th (out of 17 peer countries) on income equality. Canada has been unable to reverse the rise in income inequality – and poverty rates – that occurred in the 1990s. From February 2013… (more…)

picture 496Demonstrations were held across the country Thursday July 25, 2013 as a growing chorus of Canadians urged the federal government to release documents related to nutritional experiments done on aboriginal children decades ago. The protests, which varied in size, were sparked by a report published earlier in the month that said 1,300 children in northern Manitoba and at six residential schools across Canada were deprived of food and used as subjects to test the effects of minerals and vitamins in the 1940s and 1950s. Before photographer and essayist Christopher Grabowski moved to Canada in 1992 he was part of “a social movement that started as a protest and that successfully transformed the society by non-electoral and mainly non-violent means—the Solidarity movement in Poland.” Grabowski writes in The Tyee that “Although I’m not exactly experiencing déjà vu, much of what I am seeing and reading now is beginning to look familiar. Lawyers for homeless and inadequately housed Ontarians have appeared in Ontario Superior Court of Justice to argue against a government motion to strike their landmark legal challenge

picture 481In the spring of 2010, several individuals and the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation filed a landmark legal challenge at the Ontario Superior Court. The ‘Right to Housing challenge’ argues that the governments of Canada and Ontario are in violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for their failure to address, and their contribution to, the growing crisis of homelessness and inadequate housing. Seniors homelessness is on the rise in Greater Victoria—prompting a call for more age-appropriate housing

picture 482A change is being seen among homeless people in Victoria, British Columbia. Alan Rycroft, a spokesperson for the Victoria Cool Aid Society, told MetroNews, “In our shelter system, we’ve been watching the ages climb and we also see it in our intake for supportive housing.” Andrew Wynn-Williams, executive director of the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, told MetroNews that it’s a matter of demographics: “We have an aging population, and that will impact on the homeless population as well.” (more…)
