Shyness, anxiety, and worry in Kindergarten-aged children can be indicators for potential anxiety disorders

A University of British Columbia research team has developed a simple two-question test to screen Kindergarten-aged children for future anxiety disorders—the most commonly reported mental health concern among children. The screening questions, which asked parents about shyness, fear, and anxiety in their children, had an overall accuracy of over 80% in diagnosing anxiety disorders in young children. (more…)

A generation’s future could include more crime, drug use, teen pregnancies, poor health and failure at school and work

Could British Columbia be the very last province to enact a plan to fight poverty? That’s the question asked by BC Campaign 2000 in its latest report card on child poverty [opens to PDF]. Statistics show that the child poverty rate in B.C. rose from 14.5 percent in 2008 to 16.4 percent in 2009. The B.C. rate was only slightly lower than the Manitoba rate of 16.8 percent and was much higher than the national rate for all ten provinces of 14 percent. (more…)

Nanaimo Addiction Foundation works with youth to create a forum for learning, raising awareness

Substance abuse among Canadian youth is a significant issue and can result in serious harm—including injury, overdose, car crashes and sexual assault. Young people are the most likely to use substances, to engage in risky forms of use, and to experience harms as a result. 60% of illicit drug users are 15 to 24 years old.

Prevention programs are often the first line of defence in preventing and reducing drug use among youth. When done well, they are the best investment that we can make. (more…)

Mark McLaughlin’s tireless campaign to prevent the nightmare of meth addiction

Last week approximately 200 Nanaimo school pupils heard Mark McLaughlin’s “Be Crystal Clear” presentation, learning more about refusal skills and keeping themselves safe when confronted with drugs such as crystal methamphetamine.

McLaughlin and the B.C. Crystal Meth Society have worked tirelessly since 2005 to provide prevention education to thousands of pupils across the province. (more…)

The bully, the bullied, and the role of the community

Two recent deaths, by suicide, of bullied teens has again raised the issue of bullying in school settings. Ashkan Sultani, 15, of Lantzville, died January 12th. His parents have revealed he had moved schools but had not been able to escape bullying. In South Hadley, Massachusetts, 15-year-old Phoebe Prince died January 14th of an apparent suicide. She had been relentlessly bullied at school. (more…)

Using stigma as a public health tool in the prevention of smoking

“In recent years, addictions policy has stressed the need to counteract stigmatization in order to promote public health. However, through tobacco ‘denormal-ization’ strategies, tobacco control advocates appear to have embraced the use of stigma as an explicit policy tool.”

So says a recent research article authored by the University of British Columbia’s Kirsten Bell and others. The paper argues that smokers have been stigmatized by current tobacco policies, with a number of potentially negative impacts. (more…)
