Evalena Schwartz is a quirky, endearing character who brings a unique perspective on life, love, and art

Evalena is a teenager who excels at art, dislikes math, wants to fall in love, has a mom and dad, a baby brother and a best friend, and lives with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)…just like a lot of kids.

Annemarie Richmond is an author, an FASD facilitator, and the originator of what will become a trilogy following the experiences and adventures of Evalena. Annemarie’s goal in writing the Moonkissed trilogy is to provide a unique brand of entertainment and to promote the inclusion of youth who live with FASD. (more…)

Coronation Street brought working class lives to telly and became an international phenomenon

December 9th marks the 50th anniversary of the enduring TV program Coronation Street, one of the early examples of “kitchen sink drama” that emerged in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s. In what was cutting-edge drama, the program “used a style of social realism which often depicted the domestic situations of working class Britons living in rented accommodation and spending their off-hours in grimy pubs to explore social issues and political controversies.” [Source: Wikipedia] It also skillfully mixed comedy and pathos, a Coronation Street trademark approach that continues to this day [opens to YouTube]. Donna Lynch visited 50 countries in 50 weeks, asking 50-something women about their lives

Victoria author Donna Lynch has just written an account of her recent extensive travels in 50ish: A Journey to 50 Countries in 50 Weeks Interviewing Women in Their Fifties. The journey—and the resulting book—helped Donna with the grief of losing her mother to cancer. 50ish is the story of Donna’s journey and interviews with the women she met. She found women in 39 of the countries who were willing to answer questions about marriage, religion, education, menopause, and more. Donna wanted to know: Are 50ish women around the world happy? Reconnecting with Simon Walls—now in Montreal—about his walk across Canada

Singer-songwriter Simon Walls’ travels began shortly after the loss of a friend to suicide. He spent seven months in the Katimavik program and then walked across Spain, accompanied by the book “The Pilgrimage”, by Paulo Coelho. In April 2010 he left Victoria on what will be a cross-Canada walk—to share his music and experiences. He stopped by Nanaimo on April 22nd, and joined the People First Radio broadcast. Simon also spoke with us from Saskatchewan on Canada Day. He has been written up in Canadian Geographic and in an article called Breaking down Simon’s walls in Toronto-based Sticky Magazine. (more…)

Annual event highlights the importance of youth literacy with in-person poem-ing

Poets across Canada will visit juvenile detention centres, alternative schools and youth centres October 4th to 9th, 2010, during the seventh annual Random Acts of Poetry event, sponsored by The Canada Council for the Arts. For the first time, the event is focused this year on bringing poetry to young people. Organizers want to draw attention to youth literacy, which they consider to be a crucial issue for Canada’s future.

Nanaimo poet Kim Goldberg’s latest book is RED ZONE, a poem diary of Nanaimo’s homeless population. Kim is a frequent performer at spoken word events on Vancouver Island. (more…)

Sandra Yuen MacKay’s book is a true story about her journey of recovery

Sandra Yuen MacKay has written a book about her recovery from what she describes as an invisible disability—schizoaffective disorder—which includes a combination of schizophrenia and a mood disorder. The true story about her journey of recovery from mental illness has just been published. My Schizophrenic Life: The Road to Recovery From Mental Illness begins with early memories from childhood and junior high school—and then follows Sandra as, in her own words, the gate slowly closes, separating her from normal existence.
