The prison suicide of Ashley Smith brings corrections deficiencies to light

Ashley Smith was a troubled teen from Moncton, N.B. who had been assessed by child psychologists several times in her youth, and was in constant trouble with the law. She was eventually placed in Ontario’s Grand Valley Institution for Women, a federal prison, when she was 18. (more…)

Focus on a major preventable cause of premature death

picture 123Suicide is a leading cause of death for people worldwide, and one of the three leading causes of death for young people under 25. Suicide has biological, cultural, social and psychological risk factors but despite its often complex origins, suicide can be prevented. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for all sectors of the community to focus public attention on the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviours and promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities. A high profile tragedy raises awareness

picture 108Former Saskatchewan member of Parliament Dave Batters took his own life on June 29, 2009 after a lengthy battle with anxiety and depression. He was 39 years old. Mr. Batters left federal politics in 2008, saying that he planned to work on recovery.

At a memorial service held Saturday July 4, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “Each year, nearly 4,000 Canadians make this same choice. Mostly, the experts tell us, it is a decision to end their burden of depression.” The high-profile tragedy has drawn increased attention to anxiety, depression, and suicide. (more…)
