Soles Remembering Souls ‐ Connecting Survivors will be held at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo on Sunday November 23, 2014 to support those left behind after deaths by suicide
Every year, many people lose their lives to suicide, leaving behind family, friends, colleagues and others who struggle to make sense of their loss. Our community is unfortunately no exception. On Vancouver Island, we lose more people to suicide than to motor vehicle accidents and accidental overdose combined. Research also tells us that someone who has lost a significant person to suicide is at a 9 times greater risk themselves.
That means that there are many people in our community who are suffering from this devastating loss. And what the Vancouver Island Crisis Society has learned is that people often suffer alone, in silence. In coming together and creating connections in our community, the organization hopes to end that silence and give voice to the survivors. Soles Remembering Souls ‐ Connecting Survivors will be held at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo [opens to map] on Sunday November 23, 2014, to support those left behind. This event will work toward establishing connections between suicide loss survivors, attempt survivors and other caring members of the community.
Doors open at 2:00 pm where there will be a Kids Play area, along with community resources, prior to a presentation in the theatre including live music. A memory wall will be available for people to display a picture or memento, or to write a note or leave a message. There will also be support people available should anyone want to talk to someone.
People attending are asked to bring a new or gently used pair of shoes in honour of their loved ones. These shoes will be placed on the stage in a ceremony and later donated to people in need in our community. If you would like to have the name of your lost loved one appear in the presentation, please email mattd@vicrisis.ca with the information.
