Government surprises many with a host of changes that are designed to support vulnerable families

The British Columbia government surprised many on June 11, 2012 when it announced a long list of changes to welfare assistance in the province. Premier Christy Clark made the announcement, which was described as the first pillar of her Families First Agenda: Supporting Vulnerable Families. The changes and initiatives are designed to “help build a stronger foundation for B.C. families to help them become self-sufficient”. (more…)

Transgender Canadians have won a few significant victories in the ongoing struggle for acceptance and recognition

Canada’s transgender community, after lengthy struggles with discrimination and bureaucratic obstacles, is now celebrating a series of significant victories, reports the Montreal Gazette. Montreal’s Concordia University has become the second university in the country to allow transgender students to use their chosen name in class and on their ID. Passport Canada is considering making passports genderless. And, with considerable media attention, Jenna Talackova was given permission to compete in the Miss Universe Canada, held in Toronto. A reality TV series called “Push Girls” is bringing an unfettered, uncensored glimpse at what it means to be sexy, ambitious and living with paralysis in Hollywood. The series follows four “attractive women navigating their friendships, relationships, and careers with a dose of producer-injected drama.” Tiphany Adams declares, in the show’s premiere episode: “Yes, I can have sex…lots and lots of sex.” (more…)

Unexpected land negotiations with City of Nanaimo provide ‘challenges’ for housing organizations

A new low-barrier housing project is on ice in central Nanaimo as operators face unexpected land negotiations with the City of Nanaimo…. B.C. Housing announced last November that [Nanaimo Affordable Housing] and its partners, the Haven Society and Columbian Centre Society, would operate more than 35 low-barrier housing units on Dufferin Crescent. The project is part of the province’s $36.5-million funding commitment to see 165 housing units built in Nanaimo for the homeless and mentally ill.  Read the rest of this story at Nanaimo Daily News.

At age 45, Andy Sibbald was diagnosed with a number of mental health issues. Andy’s professional career was adversely affected and he was granted long term disability. By combining forces with Columbian Centre, Andy is supporting people who have mental health issues that significantly impact their lives. Andy is the published author of the trilogy Ishigaq. (more…)
