Housing for all not a right, Ontario Court of Appeal rules in rejecting Charter challenge
Ontario’s Court of Appeal has quashed a landmark Charter challenge on the right of homeless Canadians to affordable housing. But the divided decision by the three-judge panel, released Monday, leaves the door open to an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, say lawyers who launched the case in 2010 on behalf of four homeless Torontonians and an affordable housing advocacy group. Hamperville Nanaimo project is launched for Christmas 2014, and asks for much-needed volunteer assistance and food donations as it continues to make a difference in the community
Christmas Hampers Nanaimo — known as Hamperville Nanaimo — is a community organization formed 11 years ago by the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and The Salvation Army of Nanaimo. The groups gather food and cash donations and distribute them to the community in need at Christmas time. In 2013 Hamperville served over 5,400 people and distributed 2,450 hampers. Organizers expect that this year an equal number of hampers will be needed.
Youth Leaders in Action spend half of their program in a Canadian community and the other half in one of 13 international partner countries
18 youth between the ages of 18 and 25 are in Nanaimo from October 11 to January 2 as part of the Canada World Youth Leaders in Action program. Half of the group is from Indonesia, while the other half is made up of Canadians from across the country. While in the city, the youth live with host families and volunteer in a range of community settings. It’s the first Canada World Youth program located in Nanaimo since 2004.
