‘Recovery Speaks’, a series of free interactive learning sessions, is being offered to the public in Victoria and Nanaimo by the Cedars at Cobble Hill Society

picture 512Addiction is a chronic and progressive health issue affecting the body, mind and spirit of individuals with chemical dependency. Not only does it affect the addicted person, but it has a significant impact on family, workplace and community systems as well.

Recovery Speaks is a series of engaging interactive presentations designed to educate individuals, families, workplaces and policy makers as well as people in recovery. (more…)

A fundraiser for Columbian Centre, a musical feast for you!

Come and join us for a unique evening of live music by local musicians. The program will explore popular songs inspired by mental health and addictions experiences.

Friday November 15, 2013 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at The Bailey Studio, 2373 Rosstown Rd., Nanaimo. The evening includes a door prize, silent auction and 50/50 draw, along with visiting, socializing, and catching up with your peers and fellow burghers!

We’re joined by Bobbi Schram, and Joan Wallace with The Martys.

currents autumn 2013Since mental disorders and addictions are usually consigned to the healthcare domain, it is not surprising that most attention is channeled into the notion of illness and the medications which are employed to mitigate symptoms. However, “the primary factors that shape the health of Canadians are not medical treatments or lifestyle choices but rather the living conditions they experience. These conditions have come to be known as the social determinants of health.” (Mikkonen, J. & Raphael D. John Howard Society executive director says Ottawa’s proposed victims’ rights bill distracts from the real crisis in Canadian justice, and promises yet further regress

picture 509Catherine Latimer of the national John Howard Society, has written an op-ed article in the Toronto Star arguing that the Conservative government’s Victims’ Bill of Rights smacks of medieval justice.

Latimer observes that the victims’ rights bill is a distraction from the ‘real crisis’ in Canadian justice—“the congestion and delays in our courts, together with the crowding in our prisons and remand centres, which threaten our capacity to respect fundamental principles of justice and Charter-guaranteed protections.” (more…)

The CEDAW Report Card is West Coast LEAF’s annual assessment of how well BC is measuring up on international legal standards of women’s equality set out in the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
