Online grieving, whether on Facebook or other social media, is becoming the new normal…but does it actually help?

After the campus shootings in the U.S. at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois University in 2008, hundreds of affected students turned to social media websites to share their grief and search for solace. A study of these students found that their online activities neither helped nor harmed their long-term psychological health.

The study gave a first-of-its-kind portrait of student reactions to shootings on their campuses. It also documented both the online and off-line activities they engaged in to memorialize and recover from these events. (more…)

Men and women attending a workshop about gender-based violence emerge with a focus on working together for change

Jackson Katz is a social theorist, educator, anti-sexism activist and a major advocate of the ‘bystander approach’ to gender violence and bullying prevention. Nanaimo Community Hospice has been serving the community for over 30 years, and was Canada’s first community-based nonprofit charitable Hospice. The organization believes that the dying should  experience dignity and peace, their caregivers should get the help they need, and their friends and family should be supported in their grief. A new book capturing the images of some of the west coast’s most admired authors and poets has been launched

A new book called 111 West Coast Literary Portraits features rare portraits of emerging, mid-career and well-known writers who have lived in British Columbia, accompanied by excerpts of their writing. Photographers Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright began photographing writers in 1998, travelling the Coast and Gulf Islands seeking the famous and infamous. They took pictures of writers in their personal spaces, intimate portraits of B.C.’s best, most honoured, as well as emerging, literary talent. (more…)
