It’s called Kube, and its developers describe it as the world’s perfect social network. Two Nanaimo brothers, Michael and Ian Reid, along with their team at Red Scotch Software, will roll out the beta version of a new fully private social network in October 2015. They’re taking on Facebook, which may seem audacious, but as Michael says, Kube will offer “a great user engagement experience” that can’t be found elsewhere.

Privacy is about being free from unwanted observation

The Red Scotch vision of “privacy” is not about having something to hide, rather it’s about being free from unwanted observation. They want a world where the relationship between user and software provider is transparent, mutually beneficial and allows the user to make decisions on their information in a straightforward, simple manner.

I haven’t had a Facebook account forever and I wanted to go and take a look at it. I used a fake user name and a fake birthdate and I put it into a mode where it couldn’t see anything about my computer, but Facebook was still able to accurately profile exactly who I was. It knew everything about me to a pretty frightening degree of accuracy. That is something a lot of people aren’t aware of, and it’s something we see as being a big problem. — Michael Reid, Red Scotch Software, in The Parksville Qualicum News

The first fully “private” social network, Kube, treats the user not as the product, but as an owner of the network. Kube users will have access to the social features they want without fear of profiling, surveillance, or being treated as a product.

Beta launch in October 2015

Kube launches in beta this October 2015 and anyone interested in participating in the new social network can reserve a beta invite here. Kube promises a “level of control that is simply not available anywhere else” and a “zero knowledge infrastructure.” But you won’t have to leave your current social network to experience Kube — you’re simply invited to give it a try.

We find out more about Kube from Red Scotch Software’s chief marketing officer Michael Reid.
