Nanaimo Eagles team offers the hockey experience to people with developmental challenges

picture 449aThe puck moves quickly up the ice, from the rock-steady defence to the winger flying up the boards on the left side. He skates the puck deep into the corner, turns and sees the centre driving to the front of the net. The pass is a perfect, tape-to-tape effort and as the centre receives the puck she shoots it quickly, not allowing the goalie to get set. The mesh ripples. The crowd cheers loudly, and the players all give each other “High Fives”. Sounds like a scene that happens in every rink in every town across the country. A national standard for workplace mental health

Workplace managers say that they’re informed about mental health issues, but would benefit from training to help employees with mental health problems stay at work or return to work successfully and healthily

The Canadian Standards Association together with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, has released a national standard for psychological health and safety in the workplace, along with guidance for staged implementation.

The national standard defines and sets a higher standard for workplace mental health with a goal of protecting and improving the mental health of Canadian workers. It’s designed for both employers and employees. (more…)

Jackson Katz is a social theorist, educator, anti-sexism activist and a major advocate of the ‘bystander approach’ to gender violence and bullying prevention. Nanaimo Community Hospice has been serving the community for over 30 years, and was Canada’s first community-based nonprofit charitable Hospice. The organization believes that the dying should  experience dignity and peace, their caregivers should get the help they need, and their friends and family should be supported in their grief. The planning for social housing in Nanaimo—as in cities and towns in many parts of Canada—has been accompanied by concerns from neighbours in areas where the facilities will be built.
