Lawyers for homeless and inadequately housed Ontarians have appeared in Ontario Superior Court of Justice to argue against a government motion to strike their landmark legal challenge

picture 481In the spring of 2010, several individuals and the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation filed a landmark legal challenge at the Ontario Superior Court. The ‘Right to Housing challenge’ argues that the governments of Canada and Ontario are in violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for their failure to address, and their contribution to, the growing crisis of homelessness and inadequate housing. The ‘Sally Ann’ has been serving and working in Nanaimo, and Vancouver Island, for 125 years

picture 476The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social services across Canada, outside of government. But for many ordinary Canadians, the closest they come to recognizing the “Sally Ann” is during the organization’s annual fundraising campaign during the Christmas season. That campaign, with its iconic cash pots and ringing bells, has raised funds for many years to support local Salvation Army programs. (more…)

Pulling back the curtain on the widely felt, seldom-discussed discrimination that Chinese seniors face every day

picture 469In Vancouver’s Chinatown, seniors who speak only Cantonese or Mandarin face discrimination, marginalization, and a lack of affordable, culturally- and linguistically-appropriate housing. Research suggests the problem will worsen as these vulnerable seniors, already living in poverty and isolation, age. Housing reporter Jackie Wong reveals, in a special Tyee series, the widely felt but seldom-discussed discrimination that Chinese seniors face every day. She also looks at innovative housing solutions found in Toronto and San Francisco.

Black fathers can face challenging issues

But there’s next-to-no Canadian data on black fathers. The founder of the Black Daddies Club support group intends to change that with a research project.

picture 459The Black Daddies Club was founded in 2007 by Brandon Hay in response to the lack of forums and spaces for Black men to discuss parenting issues as well as the issues facing the Black Community as a whole. Brandon told Notable.ca that the Black Daddies Club “creates safe spaces for black fathers for us to speak about our challenges as well as victories as parents, also to work with the media to create an alternate, more positive image of black fathers.” (more…)

The Pidgin Restaurant struggle is part of a larger problem–lack of affordable housing and fear of being priced out of the neighbourhood

picture 460By the time the mainstream media began to focus its attention on the protests being held at the Pidgin Restaurant in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, the protesters had been on the sidewalks in front of the new business for several weeks. Front page stories followed. Christopher Reynolds reported in the Vancouver Sun that the protests were “the latest — and most strident — in a series of demonstrations that participants and targets both say is reaching a boiling point.” The National Post’s Brian Hutchinson opened an article called “Pidgin patrons not put off by angry protests against Vancouver’s latest ‘gentrification atrocity’” with a quote from a Pidgin host, while showing the columnist to a table: “Don’t worry,” says our host, showing us to a table at the front of his new restaurant. “The windows are bulletproof.” (more…)

Law students and members of the University of Victoria’s Poverty Law Club have asked the regional coroner to conduct an investigation

picture 461Members of the University of Victoria’s Poverty Law Club have drawn public and media attention to thirty deaths among Victoria’s homeless people. The deaths occurred over a four month period during the summer of 2012 and the number of deaths is three times higher than in previous years, according to Don Evans, executive director of Our Place Society. Evans told the Times Colonist that most of those who died were in their 40s, adding that without proper shelter, nutrition or medical care, infections and diseases thrive. (more…)
