The Nanaimo Women’s Centre has been using a creative community model — building pathways of social inclusion and engagement for families marginalized by trauma, poor mental health, or addictions.
The Nanaimo Women’s Centre marked another year of community-based action and support at its annual general meeting on October 8, 2015. The organization provides women and families with the tools, education, and resource planning to expand their social, cultural and economic opportunities.
While this has been another fast paced year, upon reflection it has been tremendously successful. What we have accomplished together is a testament to the power of community. — Lesley Clarke, executive director, Nanaimo Women’s Centre
The Place
Over the past year, the Centre developed a new initiative called The Place. The project uses a “creative community” model to help build pathways of social inclusion and engagement. Marginalized families are given opportunities to use their talents and ideas in contribution to their community.
The Place is a celebration of our attachment to our place through memory, beliefs, traditional knowledge, resources, social and cultural practice, and relationships. This is an exploration into how we form our community and how our community forms us.
The Place project joins the Centre’s suite of programs — Turning the Key, Community Action Team, Homes to Homes, STAR, 16 Steps, and others — that support positive change for individuals and families.
Families who are now, or have in the past, struggled with trauma, substance abuse, or mental ill health are invited to participate in fun, food, and inspiring activities.
