Dying With Dignity: Expanding end-of-life choices

dyingwithdignityA 2012 Angus Reid poll showed that 80% of Canadians support the right of terminally ill patients to have medical assistance to die.  Similarly, an Environics Institute poll released December 2013 found Quebec residents are more likely than other Canadians to support medically assisted death. The poll found that nearly four in five Quebec residents said they approved of allowing a terminally ill or severely disabled person to end their life.

Dying with Dignity Canada (DWD) is a Canadian organization devoted to improving quality of dying and expanding end-of-life choices for all Canadians.

The beginning of February marks the start of the Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign. On this week’s People First Radio broadcast on January 30,2014, we feature interviews with people from different aspects of this important work.

Trixie Hennessey is the program coordinator of the Woodstone Residence, a residential treatment program for young women, located on Galiano Island.

She will tell us about their history and programs.

Blake Woodside M.D is the director of the inpatient eating disorders program at the Toronto General Hospital and professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto.

His specialty is the treatment of eating disorders in adults and his research covers a wide range of topics related to eating disorders.

HIV and AIDS have been with us for thirty years but stigma and its effects continue to create harm

picture 513VICTORIA, BC—While this year’s UNAIDS World AIDS Day theme, ‘Getting to Zero’, aims to achieve zero new HIV infections and zero AIDS deaths, it is the goal of getting to zero stigma that is often hardest to attain. Advancements in treatment and broader access to testing have made the first two ‘zero’ goals within reach on Vancouver Island. However, for a coalition of storytellers who are living with HIV in the capital region, stigma remains a harmful and dominant force. (more…)
