Despite solid performance, high rates of poverty and a large gap in income between the rich and everyone else put stress on a society and on the economy

picture 458The Conference Board of Canda is an independent, not-for-profit applied research organization that specializes in economic trends, as well as organizational performance and public policy issues. The group’s 2012 “report card” on Canada’s performance has revealed that, despite a general “B” grade in the country’s “society” performance, Canada places 12th (out of 17 peer countries) on income equality. Canada has been unable to reverse the rise in income inequality – and poverty rates – that occurred in the 1990s. (more…)

Human Rights Watch alleges in an explosive report that members of the R.C.M.P. in northern British Columbia failed to protect indigenous women and girls from violence–and physically and sexually abused some of them

picture 455The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in northern British Columbia has failed to protect indigenous women and girls from violence, adding to longstanding tensions between the RCMP and indigenous communities in the region, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. (more…)

A Victoria-based campaign seeks to discard the street name reminders of British Columbia’s troubled history

picture 453 ‘Taking the Names Down from the Hill’ is a new campaign being launched by SocialCoast.org. It’s designed to bring attention to place names throughout the communities of Victoria, British Columbia, where there have been streets, buildings, and areas named after things with an often disturbing history.

SocialCoast activists hope to educate the public about colonization/decolonization, and the traditional place names on Saanich, Lekwungen, and Esquimalt territory. (more…)

Lea Ross and Bev Cole have been working to help people in a Nepalese village to obtain water for its schools

After organizing several treks to Nepal after her first visit there twenty years ago, Lea Ross has “fallen in love” with the country and its people. Lea told the Nanaimo Daily News that she now wants to “give back to the country that has given me so much.”  Her Nepalese guide for six treks had invited her to Seduwa, his home village, and a project was born. Jim Manly’s participation in a recent mission attempting to deliver aid to Gaza helps raise awareness of needs, issues

On October 16, 2012, a tall ship called The Estelle began its voyage from Greece to Gaza, carrying citizens from a number of countries, including Parliamentarians from Greece, Norway, Spain and Sweden, and retired Canadian Parliamentarian Jim Manly. The passengers were peaceful civilians committed to non violence; they carried a cargo of aid and communications equipment—and a symbolic cargo of solidarity with struggling Gazans. It’s your life and it should be your choice as to how and when you die. That’s what British Columbia resident Gloria Taylor believed. That’s why Taylor, who had Lou Gehrig’s disease, took her case for the right to die to the B.C. Supreme Court. She won that battle. Now, Gloria Taylor has died, of natural causes. Gloria’s mother, Anne Fomenoff, said of her daughter’s passing, “Gloria was able to live her final days free from the fear that she would be sentenced to suffer cruelly in a failing body.” (more…)
