Returning guest Andrea will update listeners on her efforts to educate others on the effects of Bipolar Disorder

bipolarbabe2014 On January 23rd, Nancy and Ashta will speak with Andrea Paquette, AKA the Bipolar Babe.  Andrea is the executive director of the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC, an educator and Masters student in Political Science.

Andrea draws on her own experiences with Bipolar Disorder to inform her classroom presentations, support groups and outreach work.  She will be telling us about exciting new developments in her work life and special recognitions that she has recently been awarded.  She can be found on-line at Bipolar Babe.com

HIV and AIDS have been with us for thirty years but stigma and its effects continue to create harm

picture 513VICTORIA, BC—While this year’s UNAIDS World AIDS Day theme, ‘Getting to Zero’, aims to achieve zero new HIV infections and zero AIDS deaths, it is the goal of getting to zero stigma that is often hardest to attain. Advancements in treatment and broader access to testing have made the first two ‘zero’ goals within reach on Vancouver Island. However, for a coalition of storytellers who are living with HIV in the capital region, stigma remains a harmful and dominant force. (more…)

‘Recovery Speaks’, a series of free interactive learning sessions, is being offered to the public in Victoria and Nanaimo by the Cedars at Cobble Hill Society

picture 512Addiction is a chronic and progressive health issue affecting the body, mind and spirit of individuals with chemical dependency. Not only does it affect the addicted person, but it has a significant impact on family, workplace and community systems as well.

Recovery Speaks is a series of engaging interactive presentations designed to educate individuals, families, workplaces and policy makers as well as people in recovery. (more…)

Amy Candido lives in recovery from eating disorders

picture 446The beginning of February each year marks the launch of the Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign and National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

Health authority pulls funding from west coast mental health groups

Vancouver Coastal Health will no longer fund a range of community-based mental health groups, in a decision that was reportedly based on VCH’s imperative to focus on “core health services”

picture 487Five community-based nonprofit groups on the west coast have lost their funding from Vancouver Coastal Health in an unexpected decision that the health authority says will increase focus on “core health services.” The affected organizations include: The Art Studios, Access Community through English (ACE) Program, British Columbia Schizophrenia Society, Mood Disorders Association of B.C., and West Coast Mental Health Network.
